Public comments, board members spar over Gettysburgfootball coaching post and Fairfield coop; board says head-coach position posted

Dozens of residents and parents told the Gettysburg Area School District Board of Directors on Tuesday they want clarity and transparency about the districthandling of the Gettysburg football program and the recently advertised cooperative-sport agreement with Fairfield.

At least seven public commenters addressed the board during citizensparticipation. Several speakers urged the district to rehire or retain head coach Matt Heizer; others criticized board members for what they described as "micromanaging" or for contacting outside stakeholders to influence athletic decisions.

Jamie Gephardt told the board: "Rehire coach Heizer and end this madness." Jody Leedy said the cooperative agreement does not create a new program or new position and questioned why the district posted a head-coach opening; she said the coop language identifies Gettysburg as the host school and that Fairfield had held a public Q&A but Gettysburg had not.

Several speakers alleged that two board members solicited an outside youth-league leader to speak at board meetings. Jill Whitmer read an email from Chris Thompson, president of Gettysburg Midget Football, saying he was contacted by board members and pressured to speak against Heizer; she cited PA statute 65 (public officers) and the districtpolicy on conflicts of interest and asked that the named board members be recused from any coach-hiring decisions. Wade Levy said he had reviewed the coachfiles and text messages and asserted there was nothing in the personnel file to justify removal.

Justine Sig raised process questions about the policy committee and whether the district had posted the coop and hiring choices in a way that complied with open-meeting rules; she asked whether the lack of public Q&A in Gettysburg matched Fairfieldpractice. Sig also urged the board to improve support for staff and coaches and asked whether board actions had created a hostile environment for coaches.

Several board members responded on process. One board member acknowledged past policy changes had been made in response to prior coaching incidents and said the policies were intended to protect students. Board members discussed policy 308 (supplemental contracts) and whether administrative guidelines should direct the timing for issuing contracts; one board member proposed that administration bring coaching contract recommendations to the board for approval as soon as athletic directors complete sound hiring reviews rather than waiting until August.

Dr. Madsner (administration) said the head-football-coach position was posted with an application deadline that night and that interviews were planned for early next week. The district said it hoped to have interviews completed so that recommended fall coaches could be brought to the board for approval at the next meeting. The athletic director and assistant superintendent were reported to be working to restore summer training opportunities and to provide supervised weight-room sessions while the hiring process moves forward.
