The Wall Township Board of Education submitted a tentative budget snapshot to the New Jersey Department of Education by the March 19 deadline, Superintendent Dr. Henderhan told the board at its March 18 meeting, and said the figure remains a “work in progress” that will be refined ahead of a public budget hearing on April 29.
“The key word is tentative,” Dr. Henderhan said, describing the district’s required submission to the Department of Education and the continuing review process involving board committees and a public budget workshop.
During public comment on agenda items, resident Betsy Cross asked for more transparency about health benefit costs, billing records and legal fees. Cross said the bills-and-claims report lists separate health-benefits amounts and questioned why the district separates Horizon insurance charges and whether the district is charging for copies in response to OPRA requests. She also raised attorney billing to a firm she named and expressed concern about what she characterized as a planned increase in health benefits spending.
Dr. Henderhan reiterated that the budget remains tentative and that a full public hearing and budget presentation are scheduled for April 29. She also reminded the public that the district must submit a tentative budget snapshot by March 19 as part of state reporting deadlines.
Board action later in the meeting approved the consent agenda with the exception of item 16. On the motion to approve the consent agenda with that exception, board members voted by roll call: Miss Adams — yes; Mr. Anizia — yes (with a stated recusal from agenda item 13, minutes); Ms. Barbiere — yes; Mr. Brereton — yes; Mr. Buffa — yes; Miss DiGiovanni — yes; Mr. Smith — yes; Mr. Wandrack — yes; Mr. Mauther — yes. The motion carried.
After approving the consent agenda the board moved back into executive session; when the board reconvened public session, it adjourned without further public action.
During the superintendent’s report Dr. Henderhan also referenced district enrollment figures for February 2025 and said kindergarten registration is underway. She described next steps in the budget process and noted an upcoming public hearing and routine calendar revisions related to remaining emergency closing days.
