The committee approved a request to reallocate roughly $3,000 to support a district DEI communications initiative that the DEI advisory committee proposed to promote the district’s equity vision.
Committee members also received a report about recommendations from a temporary discipline advisory committee that reviewed disparities in disciplinary outcomes. Administration said it will expand PBIS (Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports) trainings and more consistently implement restorative practices and a tiered behavioral framework across schools. The superintendent indicated grant money is available to support district-wide PBIS training and that the administration will return with implementation timelines and metrics.
Advisory-committee members had asked that an ongoing review include student and family voice and recommended continued committee oversight to monitor discipline data and any changes to the discipline handbook. Committee members asked administration to return with updated discipline data and a suggested structure and schedule if a permanent oversight group is to be reconstituted.
Why it matters: The discipline advisory’s work and the district’s PBIS expansion address concerns that discipline is applied unevenly across demographic groups. The DEI communications allocation funds outreach and promotion of the district’s equity work.
