Encinitas recreation report: activity‑guide registrations rise; skate bowl repairs, AEDs and Adventure Lab programming planned

Parks operations: Manager Norgard said the department will perform maintenance on the Encinitas Community Park skate bowl, replacing coping and some tile; the work is set to begin April 7 and is expected to close the bowl for about two to three weeks. Staff also announced a volunteer mosaic event for the Scott Valley Park playground replacement: the community mosaic sessions are scheduled for March 31 and April 1, with volunteer shifts to be posted through the city's volunteer system.
Recreation services: Manager Andrew Hamer reported the seasonal activity guide registration opened March 3. On the first day the department processed more than $1 million in registrations and about 3,585 customers, a roughly 7% increase from 2024. Staff linked part of the growth to inclusion of Pacific View Arts Center programming alongside recreation offerings.
Hamer said the department expanded pickleball access at the Encinitas Community Center and Senior Center gym, adding an Afternoon Rally reserved session to reduce lineups and increasing open‑play availability to six days a week; summer camp scheduling will limit some daytime hours during the six‑week summer camp period, and staff will notify players in the April calendar. Staff also intends to require registration for open play during summer months so it can communicate schedule changes by email.
Other items: Hamer said staff is working with fire and public works to install automated external defibrillators (AEDs) at major sports parks. The department will introduce Adventure Lab (a digital Adventure/Geocaching platform) at Art Night on April 5 and coordinate with the youth commission and Parks and Recreation volunteers for in‑event programming.
Upcoming community events and dates cited by staff included Arbor Day (April 5, morning, Cardiff Sports Park), a spring egg hunt (April 19, 10 a.m.–noon), Movies in the Park (May 3, 5 p.m.–dusk) and Cyclovia (May 18, 10 a.m.–2 p.m.). Staff asked commissioners to serve as ambassadors, help distribute activity guides and support pop‑up park activities at city events.
