The Village of Oswego used part of its March 18 meeting to recognize community groups and artists and to present a community grant.
Art contest: Karen Colzer and Angie Hibben joined the board to recognize winners of the Oswego Area Chamber of Commerce Hometown Expo art contest. Karen Colzer (president of the Fox River Academy of Music and Art) told the board the competition drew more than 250 entries across categories including digital art, drawing, painting, mixed media, photography, sculpture and more. A total of 30 students and adults were selected as winners across grade and adult categories. The mayor and board read winners’ names and presented certificates; the meeting noted the best in show was Resting Line by Maximilio Ballesteros (who could not attend owing to an emergency).
Senior center check: Village representatives presented a check to the Oswego Senior and Community Center. Michelle and Terry accepted on behalf of the center; Michelle thanked the village “on behalf of my board members, as well as all the seniors that participate at the senior center, our staff and our volunteers,” and said the funds would be used for center programming and capital improvements.
Business of the Month: The board recognized Fox Valley Winery as the Economic Development Commission’s March Business of the Month. Staff described the winery’s history, award wins at state and international competitions, participation in local events and membership in the Oswego Area Chamber and Oswego Downtown Association. The staff report said Fox Valley Winery produces about 12,000 gallons of wine per year (nearly 60,000 bottles annually).
Earth Hour proclamation: Village President Ryan Kaufman read a proclamation designating March 22, 2025, from 8:30–9:30 p.m. as Earth Hour in the Village of Oswego and called on residents to support the effort by turning off nonessential lighting during the hour.
Ending: The recognitions highlighted local arts, business and senior programming; staff and trustees encouraged residents to attend upcoming events, including a community coffee at Fox Valley Winery on April 12 focusing on water.
