The United Nations reported substantial damage and displacement across Southern Africa after Tropical Storm Jude hit Madagascar, Malawi and Mozambique.
OCHA's regional office said nearly 420,000 people were affected by the storm, which brought heavy rains and strong winds, damaged infrastructure and crops, blocked roads and disrupted access to services. In Madagascar more than 300 classrooms were destroyed, leaving over 80,000 students out of school. The storm was described as the third consecutive severe weather system to affect Madagascar since February.
In Mozambique authorities and partners activated an anticipatory action program and the UN Central Emergency Response Fund (CERF) dispersed $6,000,000 three days ahead of landfall to support early response measures. In Malawi the UN and partners are working with the government on search-and-rescue and provision of cash, food and shelter assistance; UN agencies also warned of a potential spike in cholera cases in Malawi and Mozambique.
Ending: UN agencies said they will continue to support government-led responses and mobilize resources to meet urgent needs as assessments continue.
