UN humanitarian officials reported ongoing clashes in eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) that have killed civilians, closed medical facilities and forced tens of thousands to flee.
The Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs said fighting in South Kivu and North Kivu provinces continues to claim civilian lives and displace people to neighboring provinces including Maniema, Tanganyika and Ituri. The report cited that more than 100,000 people had crossed into Lubutu territory from Walikale territory as of March 14, adding to about 8,000 people who arrived in Lubutu since early January. In South Kivu, recent clashes killed six civilians in Walungu territory and forced tens of thousands to flee; clashes around Uvira displaced at least 30,000 people to Fizi territory since Feb. 15.
The general hospital in Djugu territory in Ituri province has remained closed since March 14 because of recent clashes, according to local health sources. UN peacekeeping colleagues in the DRC said they continue to closely monitor the evolving security situation as movements by the M23 armed group persist; the briefing summarized reported positions and distances of M23 elements relative to towns in North Kivu and South Kivu.
Ending: UN agencies said humanitarian partners are working to address urgent needs for health, mental health, shelter, and food but said access and funding shortfalls limit response capacity.
