Glen Heights council approves charter review commission; council asks for nominees by April 1

The Glen Heights City Council on March 20 approved Resolution R-09-25 to create a charter review commission and establish guidelines for its operation.

The resolution, introduced by Council Member Travis Bruton, was presented as a continuation of an earlier discussion and described as a vehicle to review the city charter and propose updates for voter consideration. “I want us to have a charter review commission that reviews the charter, and goes over all the details of the charter so that we can put out to the citizens any updates that we want,” Bruton said during the meeting.

The council moved and seconded approval. A roll-call vote recorded all seven members voting aye: Mosley, Garrett, Bruton, Hale, Lightfoot, Binford and Mayor Brown. The motion carried 7-0.

Council members and staff said they aim to have the commission complete its work in time to place any proposed amendments on the November ballot. Staff asked council members to forward names of potential commission members to City Manager Cliff Blackwell or to any council member; the city requested nominations be submitted by April 1.

The council discussed timing for the commission’s first meeting and indicated the first meeting would be held in April. No additional details on recruitment criteria or the number of commission seats were provided at the meeting.

The city clerk will publish the formal resolution and staff will notify the council when applications or nominations are received.
