Judicial Council launches five-year court interpreter workforce pilot; 19 courts participating

Chief Justice Patricia Guerrero said the Judicial Council launched a five-year Court Interpreter Workforce Pilot Program to address interpreter shortages and bring more qualified interpreters into the courts.
Guerrero said the program pays training and exam fees for aspiring court interpreters who commit to work for the courts at least three years after passing required exams. She said 19 courts are participating, more than 1,000 applications were received, and 126 candidates are currently enrolled; the application cycle was set to reopen the month of her address.
The chief justice framed the pilot as one element of a workforce strategy to improve access to justice for court users with limited English proficiency and said the program is intended to address a long-term need for qualified interpreters across California courts.
