Chief Justice Patricia Guerrero told the joint session that remote proceedings for criminal and civil matters now have statutory authorization through Jan. 1, 2027, via budget trailer bills. She said more than 6,500 remote hearings occur each business day in California courts, saving an estimated 1,500,000 trips to courthouses annually.
Guerrero described remote proceedings as time- and cost-saving for court users and staff and said the option “gives litigants a choice about how they access the court system.” She thanked the Legislature for listening to the branch's request for an extension of remote proceedings.
