Akron council approves renewal of agricultural district for property at 1395 Collier Road

On March 17, 2025, the City of Akron City Council approved the renewal application of Amy and Robert Dunkler to keep their 16.12-acre property at 1395 Collier Road in the city's agricultural district, a designation that provides property tax relief, council members said during a special meeting public hearing.

Planning staff presented the renewal request and recommended approval. Staff told council the Dunklers devote 16.12 acres to agricultural use and that the designation provides benefits in the form of property tax relief. Planning staff also explained these renewals are typically verified every five years to confirm land continues to be used for agriculture.

A member of the public who had been sworn earlier, identified as Apostolate, spoke in favor of agricultural success but used the opportunity to raise concerns about access and equity, asking whether agricultural opportunities were broadly available to residents of different racial backgrounds. Apostolate asked, “Is this only for European Americans? I don't see these agricultural adventures taking place for people who are not European Americans,” and urged more agricultural education and opportunity for Black, brown and multiracial communities.

After the public comment period Councilman Fusco moved for a favorable committee report with suspension of the rules. The council suspended the rules with no objections and recorded a favorable committee report; the clerk recorded the ayes. Fusco explained to council members that the renewal is not a zoning matter but routine verification so property owners can continue to receive state property tax benefits for farmland use.

Because council approved the renewal under suspension of the rules, the agricultural district designation for 1395 Collier Road will continue and the Dunklers will remain eligible for the stated tax benefits pending any administrative follow-up.
