Committee approves memorial recognizing pilgrimage to Santuario de Chimayo

Senate Memorial 24, which recognizes the pilgrimage tradition to Santuario de Chimayo and outlines part of its history, received do-pass approval from the Senate Indian Rural Cultural Affairs Committee.
Senator Campos introduced the memorial, describing pilgrimages to Chimayo as a longstanding regional tradition and saying the memorial “outlines part of the history, and then it also recognizes, if you will, those who make, this this journey, this pilgrimage.”
Rudy Zamora spoke in support during public comment. “Madam Chair, members of the committee, my name is Rudy Zamora, And I really support this real strongly,” he said, recounting that he has made the pilgrimage since 2009 and in earlier years as a young man.
Committee members expressed practical concerns about visitor services along routes to Chimayo, including limited cellphone service and traffic-safety risks for tens of thousands of annual visitors; the sponsor said staff would follow up on those issues.
The chair stated there was no opposition and the committee marked the memorial “do pass” with members present voting in the affirmative.
