Curry County approves transfer of surplus canine vehicles to Brookings Police Department
Summary
The board approved lending/selling four surplus vehicles to Brookings Police Department to support an expanding canine program; two newer Durangos to be sold for longer-term use and two older Explorers to be used as short-term vehicles.
Curry County commissioners voted 3-0 to transfer four surplus county vehicles to the Brookings Police Department to support its expanding canine program.
Sheriff's office and county operations staff explained Brookings sought short-term use of two older Explorer vehicles (previously configured for canine patrol) while the department outfits two 2020 Durango vehicles the county owns. The 2020 Durangos were described in the meeting as having substantially lower mileage: one with about 76,000 miles and another with about 74,000 miles. Brookings indicated it would purchase the Durangos at Blue Book values and retrofit them for canine work; Explorers would be used short-term and one Explorer may be retained as an administrative vehicle after initial canine use.
County staff said part of the transfer agreement is that the dogs and handlers would be available to other law enforcement agencies in the county as needed. Commissioners expressed support for expanding canine capacity to assist drug enforcement countywide and approved the transfer.
The motion to approve the transfer passed unanimously.
