Klamath County approves $1.52 million in Title 3 hazard-mitigation grants

The Klamath County Board of Commissioners on March 18, 2025, approved Title 3 emergency-management grant awards totaling $1,519,170.94 after a committee prescreening and one public comment.
The grants cover multiple hazard- and fire-mitigation projects, including search-and-rescue support and Firewise community programs, county staff said. “I will move that we sign off on the that we approve the title 3 grants as outlined by, the committee in our grants department, for a total of $1,519,170.94,” the meeting chair said when making the motion. The motion was seconded and passed by voice vote.
County grants staff told commissioners the applications were prescreened for “Title 3” compliance and placed for public comment; staff said there was one public comment on the package. Grants staff reported no conflicts with Title 3 compliance and recommended approval of the set of applications. Staff also said the Rocky Point Fire board agreed to act as fiduciary manager for projects associated with that district.
Commissioners Commissioner Nichols and Commissioner Minty were present for the administrative meeting, which included only this single agenda item. Grants staff said contracts resulting from the approvals will be prepared and presented for finalization at an upcoming business meeting.
Staff also said the business meeting agenda will include termination of an existing search-and-rescue contract that, if adopted, would return about $400,000 to the grant pool and allow a $600,000 allocation related to the county—s search-and-rescue funding plan. Staff described that termination and reallocation as a separate action to be taken at the business meeting rather than part of the March 18 administrative approval.
Commissioners praised the cleanup of an older federal account that staff said had held funds without active disbursement. A participant noted roughly $1.5 million in federal dollars will go to 11 different community projects for hazard and fire mitigation and search-and-rescue support. The meeting concluded after the voice vote approving the Title 3 grants; contracts and the related termination action will return to the board in a future business session for formal execution.
