Curry County to administer "Love Your Fourth" fireworks fund; county to retain Western Display contract

Miranda Plagge presented the proposal, saying the city of Brookings agreed in February 2025 to hand off financial management because of city staffing capacity constraints. The county will oversee funds while the Love Your Fourth nonprofit continues community fundraising and sponsorships. Plagge told the board the county's involvement is intended to ensure continuity of the decades-old event, provide structured financial management and reduce administrative burden on volunteers.
The packet identifies Western Display Fireworks LTD as the pyrotechnics provider; Plagge said the contract with Western Display will remain in place. The county's direct financial contribution was described in the meeting as $5,000, managed by economic development; most event expenses are expected to be covered by donations and sponsor support from the Love Your Fourth nonprofit.
Commissioners and staff discussed logistics and local partnerships; port leadership had reserved needed space for the display but declined administrative responsibility. The board approved the transfer and authorized the county signature authority with a unanimous vote.
