The sponsor described the bill as a ‘‘pro-life’’ measure that creates a new section under Title 33 (Education), Chapter 16, to require instruction about human growth and development for grades 5 through 12. The bill would allow districts to select videos — including high-definition ultrasound footage — and require instruction on significant milestones of fetal development. The sponsor said the intent is to give students factual biological information.
A supporter who spoke said committee changes and agreements left local districts in control of the videos and materials, that the materials may address miscarriages, fetal abnormalities and genetic disorders, and that the instruction would be integrated into regular courses. That representative said those assurances led her to support the bill.
The clerk recorded the House roll call as 63 yes, 6 no, 1 absent/excused. The bill passed the House and will be transferred to the Senate.
