Board pays tribute to retired firefighters, recognizes former vice mayor; hears Social Security and pension tax bill updates

The Lexington Fayette Urban County Police and Fire Retirement Fund board paused at its March 12 meeting to offer condolences for two former members of the fire division and to recognize the late Isabel Yates, a former vice mayor.

Chief Wells recounted service histories for Gilbert "Gibby" Grogan, who served with the Division of Fire from 1973 until his January 1996 retirement and remained active in community events, and Wayne Hughes, who served from January 1959 to January 1982 and retired as a lieutenant, whose family includes current department members. Chief Weathers also spoke, saying he had worked with Grogan in the EMS section and offered condolences to both families.

Separately, a board member reported that payments resulting from the recently passed Social Security fairness legislation have already reached several retirees, including back pay and increases to monthly checks; presenters said additional payments were expected to be completed by March. The same board member updated trustees on House Bill 146, which would have excluded some pension income from taxation for certain retirees; the member said the bill was sitting in the House Appropriations Committee with no action and was unlikely to move forward this session.

The board also acknowledged the recent death of Isabel Yates, a former vice mayor who was described as a longtime public-safety supporter; trustees offered condolences and thanks for her years of service and leadership.

The meeting then moved to committee reports and adjourned.
