Committee approves work group to craft Mystic economic development and tourism plan

Representative Meskers, cochair of the House Commerce Committee, described HB 7084 as a framework to establish a work group to develop an economic development and tourism plan for the greater Mystic area.
"What you have before you is the framework, which will be built on, frankly, before it comes to the house floor," Representative Meskers said, describing the group's intent to narrow focus to transportation, pedestrian access, transit and local experience and to produce a concrete action plan. He said the proposal would likely require funding for studies but that precise funding remains to be determined.
Representative Wood asked whether the work-group model would serve as a template for other tourism areas in the state. Representative Meskers replied that "absolutely yes," adding that he hoped the effort would create a successful collaboration among DOT, DECD, the House and the commerce committee and that lessons learned could be applied elsewhere.
Committee members moved HB 7084 to the consent calendar without objection. The bill sponsor said the proposal reflected at least a year's work and that the document before members was intended as a narrower, more implementable framework than earlier drafts.
The committee record shows the bill will proceed as a framework to be finalized before a House-floor appearance, and that additional drafting and funding decisions are expected before final action.
