Committee approves bill to expand CIF reporting to include sports-related head injuries and medical problems

The Assembly Arts, Entertainment, Sports and Tourism Committee voted 9-0 to advance AB 437, a bill by Vice Chair Lackey that would require the California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) to include information on sports-related head injuries and other medical conditions in its periodic report to the Legislature and governor.
Under current law, CIF is required to submit a report every seven years that includes information on the health and safety of students in interscholastic athletics. AB 437 would expand that existing reporting requirement to include sports-related head injuries and other injuries and medical issues, reflecting recent research about long-term impacts on athletes, Vice Chair Lackey said.
Tim Madden, representing the California Chapter of the American College of Emergency Physicians, registered strong support. Committee members described the addition as an important, practical step to help the Legislature gather better information about athlete safety without creating a separate reporting mechanism.
Vice Chair Lackey said he and committee staff worked with members to address technical concerns and accepted proposed amendments. The committee passed the bill as amended; the roll call recorded Ward, Lackey, El Hawari, Gonzales, McKenner, Ortega, Quirk Silva, Valencia and Ziburr voting aye.
The bill will proceed to the next committee or floor consideration as part of the legislative process.
