Zoning commission approves six consent rezonings, including athletic complex at 528 Iberly Road

The San Antonio Zoning Commission approved six items on the consent agenda — Nos. 4, 5, 7, 8, 10 and 12 — sending them to City Council for final action within the next six months.

The items included multiple zoning changes with conditions keeping existing overlays in place. Notably, case Z-2025-1070030 (item 10) would rezone property at 528 Iberly Road to allow development of an athletic field and related uses. Dozens of callers phoned in during public comment in support of the athletic complex, saying the vacant parcel is an eyesore and the field would provide supervised recreation for neighborhood youth.

Why it matters: Consent approvals bundle routine or non-controversial rezonings and forward them to the City Council; item 10 drew visible neighborhood support and will now be considered at the council level.

Commission President John Bustamante opened the meeting and listed the consent items before commissioners moved to approve the bundle. After public comment on item 10, a commissioner asked staff to follow up on lighting plans for the athletic complex; the applicant’s representative indicated they would work with neighbors and that lighting could be incorporated before the council hearing.

Multiple callers expressed support for the athletic complex. Caller Anthony Delgado said, “Quiero expresar mi apoyo por esta rezonificación… Es bueno para la comunidad,” and several other residents echoed that the facility would provide safe, supervised activities for children. Commissioners approved the consent items without pulling any for separate discussion; roll call was taken and the motion passed.

The approved consent items will appear on the City Council agenda within six months for final action. The commission asked staff and applicants to follow up with neighbors on details such as lighting before council consideration.
