At a special-called meeting, the Nash County Public Schools Board of Education voted to enter a closed session to consider personnel matters, review certain confidential records and consult with legal counsel, Board Chair Lamb said.
The move came after the board adopted the meeting agenda. A motion to adopt the agenda was made by Mister Breaks and seconded by Doctor Chambers; Chair Lamb announced the motion carried.
During discussion of the closed-session motion, the board invoked state open-meetings exceptions, citing North Carolina General Statutes for personnel, confidentiality and attorney-client consultation. Board attorney Jason Weber recommended a roll-call vote so that the online participants’ votes would be recorded and heard: “I recommend roll call votes so that each of the members participating online, their votes are recorded and heard as well,” Weber said.
The board then took a roll-call vote on the motion to enter closed session. The recorded responses were unanimous in favor; Chair Lamb then announced, “We are now entering closed session,” and asked nonmembers to leave the room.
The board did not disclose further details in public session about the subjects to be discussed in closed session. The motion cited authority to discuss initial employment of an individual employee, to prevent disclosure of personnel and other confidential records and to consult with the board attorney to preserve the attorney-client privilege. The board scheduled the roll-call recording of votes and proceeded into closed session.
No substantive decisions or final outcomes on employment or other matters were released in the public portion of the meeting.
