Denton County proclaims March 25 recognition for Delta Sigma Theta Denton County Alumni Chapter

The Denton County Commissioners Court adopted a proclamation recognizing the Denton County Alumni Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated for 30 years of service and designated March 25, 2025, in the chapter’s honor.

Councilmember Vicki Byrd came forward at the March 18 meeting to present the proclamation and spoke about the sorority’s history and service. “I am just absolutely honored,” Byrd said, describing the chapter’s programs and partnerships. The proclamation notes the chapter’s signature events and its long-standing local service, including scholarship awards to graduating seniors and partnerships with local schools and nonprofits.

The court approved the proclamation on a motion by Commissioner Edmondson and a second by Commissioner Mitchell. The motion carried by voice vote with no recorded opposition.

The proclamation read in open court lists the chapter’s programmatic thrust (international awareness and involvement, educational development, economic development, physical and mental health, and political awareness and involvement) and cites partnerships with local institutions including Texas Woman’s University and the University of North Texas. The proclamation states the chapter awards scholarship assistance each year; the proclamation text as read at the meeting described the scholarship amounts imprecisely as “8 to $10,000” and did not provide a precise annual dollar figure.

No additional county action or funding was associated with the proclamation vote recorded at the meeting.
