Council approves purchase of Ford Explorer police interceptor to replace two wrecked patrol SUVs

The St. Clair Shores City Council on Monday approved the purchase of one Ford Explorer police interceptor to replace a police SUV damaged in a January crash.
A department sergeant requested council approval to buy "1 Ford Explorer police interceptor from Guerno Ford in the amount of $46,275," noting the price reflected state-bid pricing and that much of the purchase would be funded from insurance proceeds with the remainder from motor-pool funds. The sergeant said two squad cars were lost to separate accidents in January and the vehicle is needed to replace the motor carrier unit, which transports specialty equipment such as scales.
Councilmember Vitale asked about compatibility of equipment and the longevity of current Interceptor models; the sergeant noted manufacturers are updating vehicle platforms and that some overhead lighting and rack equipment become obsolete as rooflines change.
The purchase motion was moved by Councilmember Frederick and supported by Councilmember Karen. The motion as recorded at the meeting specified an amount of $46,002.75; council adopted the purchase by voice vote 5-0. Mayor Walby and Councilmembers Karen, Frederick, Roussy and Vitale voted yes.
Ending: Staff indicated the vehicle was due to be delivered the next day for immediate upfitting. The council asked staff to ensure procurement paperwork notes the use of other-entity/state bid pricing where applicable.
