Council picks muted brown for Oakdale community center exterior in 4-1 vote

Tim (staff/consultant on the project) presented four color options and samples, describing Option 1 as a subtle brown with darker trim and noting that other choices included deeper crimson and red options. He told council members the intent was to modernize the building while providing exterior colors that flow with the interior finishes.
Public commenters weighed in. Danielle Sanders, who had just been appointed to the Senior Citizen Advisory Commission, said she supported Option 1. Resident Austin Sprague told the council, “Number 1 is, in my opinion, the best. It’s subtle. It works,” and argued repainting only the exterior would be a cost-saving approach. Shelly Cummings, representing Dunn-Edwards Paints, advised the council to consider how exterior choices would flow with the interior finishes and fixtures.
Council members discussed both the red options and the more neutral Option 1. Council member Jared Potassie voiced support for keeping the existing green and later recorded a “no” vote on the motion; other council members favored Option 1. After a motion and second to adopt Option 1, the roll call was: Mayor Pro Tem Smith, yes; Council member Kettering, yes; Council member Gilbert, yes; Council member Potassie, no; Mayor (name not specified), yes. The motion therefore passed 4–1.
Staff said the chosen palette will be applied to the exterior and that related interior touch-ups (pillars and trim) would be coordinated so the building reads consistently for events and rentals. The council also discussed potential signage and accent options for the top of the building to increase visibility.
The council did not assign a separate funding authorization at the meeting; the item approved the color selection and direction to proceed with the repainting plan.
