Board prepares tightened budget presentation for town council; scoreboard appropriation moves to council review
Summary
District leaders will present a condensed budget to the Town Council on March 18; Board of Finance approved a $201,000 appropriation for a new scoreboard and the town council will review an updated quote of about $215,000.
At the March 17 meeting, New Canaan school district leaders said they will present a shortened budget overview to the Town Council on March 18 and responded to questions from the council in advance of subsequent hearings.
Dr. Weltze, speaking for district leadership, said the district was adapting its presentation at the Town Council’s request to focus discussion and move quickly to Q&A. The presentation is scheduled for 7 p.m. on March 18; the district will return for additional sessions on March 25 and a public hearing on April 1 before the Town Council votes on April 3.
Dr. Weltze said the Town Council had submitted 36 questions so far; 20 of those focus on staffing. The district is preparing answers on staffing, insurance, federal funding impacts, salaries and benefits, and enrollment.
On capital items, the Board of Finance approved an appropriation for a new high‑school scoreboard of $201,000; the appropriation now proceeds to the Town Council. Dr. Weltze said the final vendor quote came in “a little bit higher at $2.15, give or take,” which staff described in discussion as roughly $215,000. District leaders said they were discussing fundraising with the All Sports Booster Club and the high‑school PFA to help offset the cost.
The district also reported it had adjusted other capital requests and insurance deposits to respond to Board of Finance requests and would include those changes in the town presentation. Dr. Weltze said the district expected to balance a concise presentation of priorities with opportunities for detailed Q&A.
