The Williamston Community Schools Board of Education approved a policy and accompanying form to implement the Michigan Earned Sick Time Act (ESTA) at its March meeting.
The motion covered policy 5355 (Michigan Earned Sick Time Act, ESTA) and form 5355-F (ESTA form). Board members discussed that the state brochure and any updated model language were still pending on the state government's website; once the state releases the final brochure the district will attach it to the form and distribute materials to new hires and current staff.
Superintendent Adam said the district has posted ESTA posters in all buildings and plans to notify employees about the law. "The biggest single change is just the breadth of the reasons we can take sick time now has expanded considerably," he said, noting that district policies and collective-bargaining language will be updated as needed to conform with state law.
The board approved the policies; the vote carried. Administrative staff will implement distribution of the form and updated notices and will adjust collective-bargaining or local language where required by law.
