Williamston board awards $1.19 million in contracts to replace high-school tennis courts

The Williamston Community Schools Board of Education approved four contractor awards to replace the high-school tennis courts, with a combined not-to-exceed cost of $1,185,473 paid from the district—s 2024 bond.
The board approved contracts for: Iron Horse Activation LLC (earthwork and site utilities, $274,500), Granger Construction Company (site concrete, $584,000), DeWitt Fence Company (fencing, $132,320) and Trumbull Group (general trades, $194,743). Facilities staff said the bids came in roughly $300,400 below the district—s original estimate, and savings will return to the bond fund.
Facilities staff described a multi-step process that will demolish the existing surface, install a new drainage structure, compact and test the base, and pour post-tensioned concrete designed to reduce cracking and extend service life. "We demo the entire tennis court, including like a foot down below, and put a whole new drainage structure in... then we'll put the concrete on top of it, and it's not just a typical concrete way out there, it's post tensioned concrete," a staff member said.
The project is scheduled to start May 15, the day after the district's last tennis match, with a goal to finish before the fall season. Staff acknowledged weather could affect the timeline and said contingency arrangements have been discussed with two nearby districts to host matches if the courts are not ready.
The motion to award the contracts passed by roll-call with all recorded members voting yes. Project management and detailed scheduling will be handled by district facilities staff under bond program oversight.
