District breaks ground on Hanahan Middle renovation; county students win national Beta slots

BERKELEY COUNTY, S.C. — Superintendent Dr. Dixon reported at the March 17 Berkeley County Board of Education meeting that the district broke ground on a renovation project at Hanahan Middle School funded by the county’s penny sales tax, and recognized high-school Beta Club winners who qualified for the national convention in Orlando.
Dixon said the “state-of-the-art renovation” for Hanahan Middle School was made possible by community support through the penny sales tax. The superintendent also reported the Child Nutrition Services department hosted a “Taste, Play, Connect” food show on March 15 that engaged families and solicited student feedback on cafeteria menu items.
The board recognized more than 100 awards and 44 first-place finishes by Berkeley County high-school students at the South Carolina Senior Beta Convention. Principal and sponsor representatives and Beta Club presidents from Berkeley High, Goose Creek High, Philip Simmons, Stratford, Cane Bay, Cross High and others were invited forward; several students who placed first in individual and group competitions were named on the record and qualified to compete at the national convention in Orlando this June.
Dixon also congratulated local athletics programs: Coach Peace and the Lady Stags for winning the state basketball championship (60–54 over Greenwood) and Goose Creek High’s team for finishing state runner-up after a double-overtime game (81–71).
The superintendent closed by thanking teacher-forum representatives and other staff present. No formal board action accompanied the superintendent’s announcements; they were presented as informational updates.
