Octorara board approves summer kindergarten readiness and targeted tutoring programs for July

Board approved a summer kindergarten readiness program and a targeted summer tutoring program; administrators said final staffing and costs will be determined after registrations and that ESY (extended school year) follows IDEA rules.
The Octorara Area School District on March 17 approved two summer initiatives for July 2025: a summer kindergarten readiness program (MondaythroughThursday at the Octorara Primary Learning Center) and a targeted summer tutoring program running TuesdaythroughThursday July 1 through July 24 at the Primary Learning Center and at The Point.
Administrators said the summer tutoring program will be targeted to students identified as tier 2 and tier 3 and will align with curriculum and progress measures used during the school year (for example i-Ready or other district measures referenced in discussion). The district also noted ESY (extended school year) services for eligible special education students are determined under IDEA criteria and that typical ESY participation has represented a modest share of the special education population (administrators recalled roughly 5to8 percent of the special education population in recent years).
Board members asked for more data and financial detail before full program roll-out; administrators said they will return with staffing numbers and cost estimates after registrations are complete. The district said it expects to staff the tutoring program with up to eight teachers across both locations and will reduce the program from five weeks to four and from four days per week to three (TuesdaythroughThursday) to better target instruction.
The board approved the motions on voice votes and asked staff to provide additional information on enrollment, staffing and projected cost.
