Berkeley County board overturns one expulsion, upholds another; approves personnel recommendations

BERKELEY COUNTY, S.C. — The Berkeley County Board of Education on March 17 reversed one student’s expulsion and assigned that student to the district’s alternative school, upheld a second student’s expulsion, and approved personnel recommendations from the administration following an executive session.
The board convened in executive session for discussion of employment contracts and appointments and two student expulsion appeals. When the board returned to open session, Ms. Coates moved to overturn the expulsion of student number 1 and assign the student to the alternative school; Michael Ramsey seconded. The motion carried on a voice vote (ayes indicated). The transcript records the vote as “ayes have it.”
On the second appeal, a motion to uphold the expulsion of student number 2 was made by Ms. Bradley and seconded by Ms. Davenport; the board voted to deny the appeal with the ayes prevailing, recorded as a 7–0 vote.
The board then accepted the administration’s personnel recommendations for the current school year on a motion by Ms. Davenport, seconded by Ms. Coates; that motion was recorded as passing 7–0.
Board Chair Wofford noted for the record that no action was taken while the board was in executive session. The motions and vote results were recorded in open session after the executive session concluded.
