Pine-Richland board adopts revised library-resources policy after hours of public comment

The Pine-Richland School District Board of Directors adopted a revised library-resources policy (Policy 109.1) during its March 17 meeting after extended public comment and debate, with the measure passing 5–4.

Supporters and opponents of the policy filled the public comment period before the formal board discussion, with parents, students and community members offering sharply different views on whether the change is needed. Opponents said the policy would restrict students’ access to diverse books and invite costly litigation; supporters said it would add needed oversight and “guardrails” around materials for minors.

The debate centered on how the policy would be implemented. Dr. Matthew Miller, superintendent, told the board an administrative regulation (AR) to implement the policy would be drafted and brought back for discussion; the AR will describe procedures such as how candidate titles will be posted and how the district will handle public feedback.
