Board approves E‑Rate-funded network upgrade for four schools

The Transylvania County Schools board approved a district network upgrade at its March 17 meeting to replace aging switches and fiber optic cabling at Brevard High School, Rosman High School, Brevard Middle School and Rosman Middle School.
Chris Whitlock presented the purchase, describing a statewide E‑Rate bid coordinated by the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction. Whitlock said the equipment chosen—Aruba switches and related fiber—matches the district’s existing vendor standard and will allow interbuilding speeds up to 10 gigabits per second. He described existing fiber as more than 20 years old.
On funding, Whitlock said approximately 80% of the project will be paid through E‑Rate and the state will match the remaining 20%, resulting in no local funds used for the purchase. A board member moved to approve the proposal; the motion was seconded and approved by voice vote.
The presenters and board did not identify a local capital contribution and said the procurement follows the statewide competitive process administered through DPI’s E‑Rate Form 470.
