Wilson County BOE adopts revised 2024–25 calendars, summer reading bonuses and school fees

The Wilson County Board of Education on March 17 approved revised 2024–25 academic calendars for traditional, restart and early college programs, authorized summer-reading camp compensation incentives for teachers and adopted the district’s 2025–26 student fees.
The instructional services committee presented calendar adjustments that convert several previously scheduled instructional or teacher work days to alternative classifications in order to meet state-required student hours and to accommodate missed days earlier in the school year. The board approved the revised traditional calendar and the revised restart calendar by voice vote; meeting minutes record each motion as carrying 6–1. The revised early college calendar was approved unanimously.
The board also approved summer reading camp incentives required under North Carolina Session Law 2021-8, section 7(b). The board adopted a $1,500 sign-on bonus for qualifying teachers who meet all statutory criteria for working the summer reading camp. The board additionally approved a performance bonus of $150 per third-grade student who demonstrates proficiency on the camp’s alternative assessment, for students assigned to a participating teacher and who did not previously demonstrate proficiency. Meeting discussion noted that signing bonuses are intended to attract teachers to work the program, while performance bonuses are paid at the end of sessions and are not subject to retirement contributions.
Instructional services presented a visitor and volunteer management platform replacement: Raptor Technologies (visitor-management platform) at $20,099.20 and Apple Education iPads to support that platform at $32,985.76 (two devices per school as described by administration). Those items were presented as contracts requiring board notification.
The committee also presented a revised graduation-requirements policy (policy 3460) for first reading; that policy revision was informational at this meeting and will return for action at a future meeting.
The board approved the 2025–26 fees schedule — which includes parking, senior, technology and yearbook fees — with no changes from the previous year, and retained the established process for fee waivers for qualifying students.
Votes on calendar revisions and bonuses were recorded during the instructional services portion of the meeting; where recorded tallies were provided, the motions carried by the counts stated on the record.
