Wilson County BOE approves contracts, budget amendments and project updates; audit firm contracted

The administrative services committee reported four purchase contracts for school facilities and playground equipment: Faciliserve for 12 basketball backstops and electrical goal lifts ($49,564.09); Royal Wood Associates Inc. to refurbish Fife High School’s gym floor ($41,127.77); PlayWorld replacement equipment for Gardner’s Elementary (K–2 playground, $34,587.85) and Jones Elementary (3–5 playground with an ADA-compliant swing, $38,085.99). The committee also provided updates on two capital projects: Benfield High School’s culinary arts classroom (final plans submitted to the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction and the building inspector) and Springfield Middle School reconstruction (permits under review; demolition began on the damaged wings; roof and steel delivery planned the week of April 14–21; target for sixth- and seventh-grade classrooms to be usable is January 2026).
The board approved an amendment to the Barnhill Building Group agreement for redesign and preconstruction services for Frederick Douglass Elementary in the amount of $113,753, and an increase to the district’s contract with Swiftway Transit LLC for transportation services for students with exceptional needs, raising the not-to-exceed cap from $750,000 to $1,000,000.
On annual procurement, the board authorized a contract with Anderson Smith Wike PLLC to perform the district audit for 2025–26 not to exceed $50,000. Board members said bringing the audit contract to the full board underscored transparency in spending.
The administrative services committee presenter noted that the Springfield reconstruction timeline depends on permit approvals; the Barnhill work schedule anticipates interior work to start once the wings are dried in. The board also voted to enter closed session later in the meeting to consider confidential personnel and student matters under cited North Carolina statutes.
Votes and formal motions taken during the administrative services portion matched the committee’s recommendations and were approved by recorded voice votes during the meeting.
The board received the administrative services committee report and closed that portion of the agenda as complete.
