Councilors warn residents about near-term electric-billing letters, NOPEC opt-out timing

City officials told residents Monday to watch for two separate mailings connected to the city's energy aggregation process: an initial letter indicating customers will transfer to the utility Ohio Edison for a short bridge period, and a second letter from NOPEC regarding the opt-out enrollment for the aggregation that begins April 24.
A city representative said the Ohio Edison bridge period will apply to customers depending on meter-read timing and that the utility price for that single-cycle bridge period will be about $0.0799 per kilowatt-hour. Officials cautioned that timing could cause customers to receive what appears to be two bills in a month or a billing period of up to 45 days.
Council members distributed talking points and urged staff to be prepared for resident calls. Mr. Lukens and Mr. Harper said the NOPEC opt-out letters were scheduled for the week of the meeting and reminded residents that if they do nothing they will be automatically enrolled unless they opt out.
