The Hawaiian Homes Commission on Monday deferred action on an item that would have amended lease commencement dates for pastoral lots awarded in 1990 at Puʻukapu (also spelled Pulukapu/Pu'u Kapu), saying beneficiaries and district staff need more time to work through questions about roads, addresses, tax impacts and insurance.
The submittal proposed a June 1, 2025 lease commencement date for 186 pastoral lots. Staff said setting a commencement date would allow lessees to receive a seven‑year real property tax exemption and for DHHL to provide the county with lessee and address information, which would help lessees obtain permits, insurance and financing. "This submittal is proposing a 06/01/2025 commencement date," West Hawaii staff explained during the presentation.
