The City of Carlsbad Parks and Recreation Commission agreed to hold a special meeting and site tour on Tuesday, July 15, 2025, with commissioners to convene in the council chamber at 12:30 p.m. before boarding transportation to visit Alga Norte Aquatic Center, Stagecoach Community Park, Poinsettia Community Park and Leo Carrillo Ranch Historic Park.
Recreation Services Manager Ashley Benson told commissioners that “the recommended action is discuss scheduling options for a Parks and Recreation Commission special meeting to tour predetermined parks, recreation facilities and capital improvement program project sites.” Commissioners and staff settled on a roughly three-hour tour so the group can interact with summer camp participants at Alga Norte and review capital-improvement projects at other sites.
The tour is intended to support the commission’s 2025 work-plan objective to “enhance accessibility, visibility and engagement,” a goal the City Council adopted on Feb. 4, 2025, according to Benson. Benson said staff recommended July 15 because camp activity on that date would maximize opportunities for commissioner interaction with campers; she added, “we typically, schedule about a 3 hour period for the tour in total.”
Commissioners discussed start times and routing. Chair Winston confirmed the commission will convene the meeting in the chamber, take care of routine items and then adjourn to a bus arranged by staff. Staff said the city has used a senior-center bus in the past. Commissioners asked for flexibility in the order of site visits to help fit four stops into the three-hour block; staff said the commission could cut a stop if timing required.
Logistics staff will produce a final route and itinerary once commissioners confirm preferred sites. Benson said staff would map the route “aside from Alga Norte” after the commission selected sites. Commissioners also discussed providing a short treat for campers during the Alga Norte stop, which staff said could be accommodated.
The commission did not record a formal roll-call vote on the tour date; Chair Winston said a vote was not necessary and the group proceeded by consensus. The meeting record shows the commission locked in July 15 and a 12:30 p.m. convening time.
Staff will circulate final tour logistics and timing before July 15.
