Committee considers renewing prepaid mobile telephony surcharge through 2031

Assemblymember Tom Rogers presented AB 330, a reauthorization to extend the local prepaid mobile telephony services collection act through Jan. 1, 2031. The act includes an 80-cent surcharge that helps local governments fund public safety infrastructure and other services.
Amy Jenkins of MuniServices and Ben Trefo with the League of California Cities told the committee the authority has been extended previously without opposition and that failure to renew would remove a local revenue tool used by more than 100 jurisdictions. "Not allowing this collection to continue will mean more than a hundred jurisdictions lose the opportunity to collect this surcharge," Jenkins said.
Supporters included dozen city representatives who testified in favor. There were no witnesses in opposition during the hearing.
Formal action: AB 330 was placed on the committee's suspense file for additional consideration.
