Nicole Hernandez, an architectural historian for the city, described the project as a grant-funded effort to prepare a historic context statement and conduct a field survey of properties within a defined San Roque boundary. Hernandez said the work is funded by a grant from the California Office of Historic Preservation and that the city has not conducted a neighborhood survey in that part of Santa Barbara in more than 13 years.
The survey will proceed in two stages. Sarah Porter, principal architectural historian at consultant South Environmental, said the first stage is a reconnaissance-level survey — walking streets, taking photographs from the public right of way and noting potentially significant properties. Porter said reconnaissance work will take place in April and May, with more intensive surveys planned for June and July. Project staff estimated they will complete the project by April 2026, with a final review by the Historic Landmarks Commission.
