America in Bloom praises Greenwood’s volunteers and awards program; Greenwood singled out for national recognition

Laura Konkle, executive director of America in Bloom (headquartered in Columbus, Ohio), told the Greenwood City Council that Greenwood has been involved in the America in Bloom program since 2016 and is one of the few participants in the South and the only one in South Carolina.
Konkle credited Discover Greenwood and local volunteers for coordinating the local effort, praised the city horticulture team, and highlighted national awards Greenwood has received — including recognition for best floral displays, “coolest places for kids,” and “coolest downtown.” She also noted that Greenwood hosted the America in Bloom national symposium in fall 2023; symposium attendees toured the art center, Uptown Market, greenhouse, Benjamin Bays House and the railroad historical center.
Konkle described America in Bloom’s mission — promoting community beautification, environmental stewardship, heritage preservation and community vitality — and encouraged ongoing volunteer and municipal collaboration. Discover Greenwood and local staff said Greenwood’s efforts have been a model for other communities and that Greenwood volunteers played a critical role in national recognition.
Council thanked Konkle for the presentation and acknowledged plans for city staff to participate in future symposium planning and presentations.
