Tehachapi Unified reviews summer maintenance and facility upgrades, highlights TEC restoration

Maintenance director Mr. Antazzari updated the Tehachapi Unified School District Governing Board on Oct. 14 about facilities and maintenance projects completed over the summer.
Antazzari said the district replaced old cafeteria tables at Cummings Valley, repainted sites including Tompkins, installed bottle-filling stations, replaced flooring at Golden Hills, completed carpeting and HVAC work at Jacobson Middle School and removed a dilapidated portable. At the high school, staff repaired a large valve, replaced the teachers’ break-room carpet with hard flooring and replaced gym mats; some exterior painting was deferred to the next summer.
The most extensive work was at the former Tehachapi Education Center (TEC). Antazzari said Expanded Learning Opportunity program funds supported restoration of the TEC band room, new storage and extensive restroom renovations. “So the biggest cost and time was the renovation of the restrooms,” he said, adding that community groups such as the Tehachapi Railroad organization had already expressed interest in holding events at the updated facility.
Antazzari also noted compliance factors that affected sequencing: to install new bleachers the district had to remove and repave a parking area to meet California building-code requirements. He thanked the maintenance team and named Kirk Gilbert and Kelly Patterson for overseeing contractor work.
No formal board action was required for the presentation. Board members expressed appreciation for the work and encouraged community visits to renovated sites.
Why it matters: Facility improvements affect student experience, program delivery and community use of district property. The TEC restoration revived a long-dormant space used for music and expanded learning programs.
Next steps: Antazzari said some exterior painting and the last phases of gym and bleacher work remain; timelines and remaining costs were not specified at the meeting.
