City reports buckthorn control work and prescribed burns at Pleasantview Park

Department of Public Works staff briefed the commission on invasive‑species control and a prescribed burn program used to manage buckthorn and other invasive vegetation.
Staff said crews tracked hundreds of hours this year on woody shrub removal, mowing and chip hauling. For larger areas that had not previously responded to mowing, the city worked with qualified burn teams to conduct a prescribed burn at Pleasantview Park in April. The burn covered multiple management units (Units 1–5 in the map staff provided); staff described a target rotation of approximately three years and said Units 8 and 9 are scheduled for work in 2027.
Staff said burns are conducted by trained crews with appropriate equipment (Nomex, radios, water tanks and fire breaks) and that residents adjacent to the burn area received advance notice. Mowing and post‑burn follow‑up (spot herbicide treatment and seedbed management for invasive forbs such as white sweet clover) were identified as necessary follow‑up.
Commissioners asked staff to prepare a short, bullet‑point summary of accomplishments and to include burn updates in the commission newsletter or packet for the next meeting.
