At a meeting of the Allentown City Public Safety Committee, members voted to advance Bill 44, which would add $16,322.02 to the 2025 general fund as a supplemental appropriation from a Commonwealth of Pennsylvania State Fire Commission grant to buy ballistic-resistant armor for fire personnel.
The appropriation funds ballistic-resistant armor that the fire department said is carried on apparatus to protect responders during emergency medical calls and other incidents. The department told the committee its current inventory is aging and typically replaced on a five-year cycle.
Fire department leadership described the grant and the need for replacement gear. “This grant was awarded by the state fire commissioner's office for a ballistic resistant armor,” a fire chief told the committee. “Our current inventory is actually going out of date. It's typically for 5 years. So that's what we're working on replacing right now.”
Council members handled the item with minimal discussion. Council member Miss Mota moved to forward the bill to full council; Mr. Zukal seconded the motion. The chair called for the vote and members voiced their approval.
The committee did not discuss broader policy changes to armor standards or long-term replacement funding during the meeting. The bill will proceed to the full City Council for final action.
