City staff on March 11 updated the Broussard City Council about a proposed subdivision at the corner of Glen and Morgan that would create five residential lots and trigger roadway and drainage improvements in the Old Town overlay district.
Walter (city staff) described an alternative that would pipe drainage into a developer’s retention pond and require the pond to be dedicated to the city’s drainage system. He told the council the approach could save substantial construction costs for the developer and reduce repeated roadway repairs tied to sewer work. “We came up with a little bit of an innovative design where we would actually pipe the drainage that goes in the ditch into their retention pond,” Walter said.
Staff also described a separate sewer issue: the existing sewer main in that location runs under the road and would require excavation and road repair if each developer attempted to connect directly. Staff estimated the alternative would save nearly $20,000 for the developer by allowing a stub to a manhole in the road instead of multiple road breaks. Public‑works staff said the drainage change would benefit the surrounding area beyond the subdivider’s parcel.
Council members and staff agreed the city had previously signaled a commitment to improve the roadway at the intersection if the property developed, but several members urged a definitive development plan before committing to a specific construction approach to avoid doing work twice. No formal action was taken; staff said they are waiting on the developer to respond about cost sharing and dedication terms.
