Parks and Recreation staff told the board that a number of programming and community events are scheduled in Wellington this summer, including a staff-run pickleball tournament, sold-out summer camp sessions, a padel facility groundbreaking and multiple community celebrations.
"Our first pickleball tournament will be this Saturday that we're hosting ourselves at Greenbrier Park, the new 6 new courts that we have there," said Eric, a Parks and Recreation staff member. He said registration for the one-day tournament is $25 per person, that ambassadors from the court opening will help run the event, and that the tournament will likely finish by early evening.
Staff reported summer camp begins next week and is effectively sold out for the season. The padel facility (described in the transcript as "Paddell"/"Padel") will be developed as a public-private partnership on vacant property northeast of the tennis complex; staff said a groundbreaking is scheduled for June 14 at 9 a.m. The transcript describes the padel courts as a separate membership model from the existing tennis contract.
Upcoming community events listed in the meeting transcript include a South Shore Park grand opening on June 24 at 10 a.m., a Juneteenth-themed event at the amphitheater (transcript lists June 14, 4โ8 p.m.), a July 4 celebration with fireworks at about 9:10 p.m., a back-to-school party on Aug. 1, and a murder mystery dinner event July 19 at Wellington Green Mall.
Staff said they will provide additional details and invitations for grand openings and that padel proponents could be invited to present at a future meeting. Ticket prices were specified only for the pickleball tournament ($25 per person) and the murder mystery dinner ($50 per person).
