Jim Clouser, president of International Association of Firefighters (IAFF) Local 2487, reported to the board June 3 on a spring defensible‑space project that paired union volunteers with Senior Rescue Magazine to assist elderly residents with vegetation clearance and fire prevention work.
Clouser said the union completed an initial list of properties and that the effort created an unexpected partnership with local high schools: students needing community service hours assisted on projects, providing labor and learning skills. “What a great opportunity to combine the community service element of our youth with our elderly and get a whole lot of work done,” Clouser said.
He credited Captain Jeff Knox and volunteers and said one high‑school student has volunteered to manage the program as part of a project. Clouser also noted upcoming fundraising and community events his union supports, including a 50/50 rodeo fundraising effort and an event pairing the union foundation with local animal welfare partners.
Commissioners thanked the union for its volunteer efforts and encouraged expanding the program. The union’s initiative is presented as community outreach and fire prevention rather than a formal district program; no board action was requested or taken on the report.
