Assembly committee hears request to appropriate capital funds for South Peninsula Hospital projects

The Kenai Peninsula Borough Finance Committee heard a presentation on Ordinance 2024-19-37, which would appropriate funds from the South Peninsula Hospital Service Area Capital Project Fund for critical hospital construction and infrastructure repairs.
Mr. Hedges presented the ordinance, telling the committee the appropriation is an advance of work previously slated for the FY26 budget and that the borough is "actively trying to pursue a couple other capital projects" that could be coordinated with this funding. When asked whether the funds came from the PREF (preliminary reserve) or the general fund, the presenter said the appropriation would draw from multiple local funding sources; no single source was definitively identified in the committee exchange.
Assembly member Dunn asked specifically whether there were any foreseen large expenditures in the PREF fund; staff said they were not aware of any established large expenditures. The committee did not take a formal vote in the finance committee meeting; the item remains before the assembly.
