Board clears first reading to create Alexandria Theater Special Use District in Richmond

Sponsor Supervisor Chan said the project had been long‑in‑development and credited planning staff and San Francisco Heritage for collaboration. The special use district would permit up to eight stories and allow up to 75 units, primarily two‑ to three‑bedroom family units with 12% on‑site affordable housing and ground‑floor commercial space. The project agreement preserves the theater façade, marquee and interior features including murals and a chandelier, according to Chan.
The ordinance affirms a CEQA determination and makes the required findings; the board passed first reading without objection. Supervisor Chan asked colleagues for support for a project she said balances housing production with historic preservation.
