ST. PAUL, Minn. — The House Ways and Means Committee on March 17 placed House File 1722 on the general register, advancing a bill that would name a stretch of highway for a fallen southeastern Minnesota police officer.
Representative Hicks, who co-authored the bill with Representative Davids, told the committee the legislation honors a local officer who was killed and noted the officer’s widow — who lives in Representative Davids’s district — is a friend of hers. Hicks said the family has raised the funds required by statute to dedicate the highway in the officer’s name.
The committee approved a motion to place the bill on the general register by voice vote. The bill’s author was not present at the hearing; Hicks presented the measure and members signified support. There was no recorded roll-call tally in committee.
Placing HF 1722 on the general register allows the legislation to proceed toward further floor consideration and indicates committee support for bringing the measure to the House calendar for a future vote.
