Superintendent Peter Quinn, representing Manhattan sanitation, told the district service cabinet that the city has suspended the residential organics (brown‑bin) program for households for the remainder of the current fiscal year and through the next fiscal year, and that residential organic bins will be collected as regular refuse if placed at curbside.
Quinn said the program’s last residential organics collection was May 1 and that the suspension is citywide. He also said a supplemental basket collection service previously provided to the district was eliminated effective May 2 because of budgetary constraints.
The district was told that alternate‑side parking rules would be enforced for one week the following week to allow street sweeping, with regular enforcement otherwise suspended during earlier pandemic restrictions. Quinn asked residents and businesses to watch the city website for updates and to follow posted signs on specific days and times.
Quinn also said sanitation crews are doing outreach and cleanup focused on encampments and areas where people have set up temporary structures near storefront scaffolding; sanitation is coordinating with police and the Department of Social Services where possible and continuing to respond to 311 service requests.
Ending: Sanitation asked the public to check nyc.gov for street‑service schedules and watch for updates on the resumption of services. Officials emphasized the changes are budget‑driven and that timelines depend on future funding decisions.
